Mr VG from Bristol
A 21-year old student sitting final exams had developed a low back pain with right-sided sciatica.

Following a 15 minute consultation the doctor was able to advise VH that he should see a physiotherapist and was able to suggest a suitable anti-inflammatory drug which could be purchased over the counter from the local chemist.

Mrs BC from Hampshire
This 46-year old lady had a long history of abdominal pain for which she had received hospital treatment a year ago. She recently developed further abdominal pain, which was unlike that of her previous problem.

Following a 40 minute consultation, it became obvious that Mrs BC’s problem related to a recent family bereavement and her subsequent grief and not to a physical problem. The doctor was able to counsel Mrs BC and advise her on ways to deal with her grief.

Mrs BC subsequently telephoned the service to say that the advice she had received had been very helpful.

The doctor also commented that having time to talk to people was rewarding and useful in fully understanding the problem.

 Mr TW from Oxford
This 34-year old man was suffering from a severe sore throat and swollen glands. During a 10 minute consultation, the doctor was able to provide advice on self treatment, and guidance on when to see if a GP if symptoms did not improve.
Miss JE from London
This 39-year old woman was having difficulty sleeping and becoming more exhausted. Following a 25 minute consultation the doctor was able to diagnose acute stress and make recommendations to manage situations more effectively as well as suggesting techniques to aid relaxation.

2 further consultations provided further support/counselling to Miss E and reminders on techniques for coping.

Mr GJ from Nottingham
A 55-year old man travelling to Vietnam and enquiring which travel vaccinations he required.

The doctor was able to indicate the required vaccinations and to discuss other precautions that needed to be taken.

Mrs JR from Lancashire
Telephoned about her 2-year old son who had a cold with a mild temperature. Although he was not particularly unwell, she wanted advice on how to deal with the temperature.

During a 15 minute consultation the doctor gave her the appropriate advice and was able to reassure Mrs JR.

Mrs AI from Scotland
This 66-year old lady had been diagnosed as having a rheumatic condition and had been seen by a specialist but she did not fully understand the nature of the condition or the implications of her treatment.

During a 20 minute consultation the doctor was able to clarify the nature of the condition and answer Mrs AI’s questions about its future management.
